Online shopping will soon become more expensive after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Thursday that states can require internet retailers to collect sales taxes. Most people are familiar with sales tax—that extra percentage stores collect from customers in many states. If you own a store in a state that collects a sales tax, you must add state and local sales taxes to the customer's total bill, collect it and send it off to the local tax authority. But if you sell your products online, you may—or may not—have similar sales-tax-collection duties. Whether you have to pay sales tax on Internet purchases is a common question in a world where consumers buy everything from clothes to food to cars online. Some people view the Internet as the prime place to start selling items that are free from sales tax. Indeed, many online retailers often lure customers in by advertising that any purchases made will be free from sales tax. On June 21, 2018, the United States Supreme Court fundamentally changed the rules for collection of sales tax by Internet-based retailers. In its decision in South Dakota v.Wayfair Inc., the Court effectively stated that individual states can require online sellers to collect state sales tax on their sales. This ruling overturns the Court’s 1992 decision in Quill Corporation v. Online sellers who are based in states with destination-based sales tax sourcing are required to charge the sales tax rate at the buyer’s “ship to” address. As a seller, you are required to calculate and charge the state, county, city and other local sales tax rates where your buyer is located.
